Some time ago, an interesting enquiry dropped into our mailbox. It was from a gentleman, who wanted to surprise his coming wife, with a proposal on their holiday in Lisbon.
We came up with 3 suggestions for him. One was a Michelin Star restaurant in Guincho, another one, a romantic sailtrip on the river Tejo, and the third one was a proposal on the top of Castelo São Jorge in the sunset.
He choose, our favourite, on top of Castelo de São Jorge, in Alfama.
We prepared an envelope containing tickets, a map on how to get there and instructions on the itinerary. This was left in the reception of the hotel, where the couple stayed.
The day after, we went up to Castelo de São Jorge at around 18, prepared the best situated table in the whole castle with a white tablecloth, 2 glasses of Espumante -Portugals answer to Champagne- and some finger food.
Then we hid.
The gentleman and his coming wife arrived in the castle. He guided her to the table. We just got a short glimpse of the joy in their faces as we left the rest to destiny.
We had booked a faboulous restaurant in Lisbon, the Chapitô, for their dinner. The Chapitô is place where you can enjoy creative Portuguese dishes with Lisbon at your feet. It has a wonderful view, and is well worth a visit.
Our German friends are now fiance and fiancee, and we want to say thank you and wish them the best of luck for the future.
